Franz Ries

Franz Ries was a lesser known member of the famous German musical Ries family, and was born on April 7th 1846 in Berlin. He started out as a violinist, studying with Massard and Vieuxtemps at the Paris Conservatoire, but had to end his promising virtuoso career because of a nervous disorder. In 1881 he founded a music publishing firm that is still present today (Ries & Erler). Franz Ries worte mainly chamber music such as songs, string quartets and solo pieces.
