Marion Bauer (1882 – 1955) was born in America, the youngest of seven children. Her parents were french-jewish immigrants. At the age of 16 she moved to her sister in New York to focus on her composing. She studied there, and throughout her life made many long trips to France to study with Nadia Boulanger (becoming one of her first american students) and André Gedalge. Later she taught classes of composition, form and analysis and music appreciationat the New York University and the Juilliard. Her most famous students were Ruth Crawfoord Seeger and Milton Babbitt. She wrote many books on music and worked as a critic.
Bauer wrote mostly chamber music and many songs, but there is a noteable piano concerto and a symphony as well.
