Der Gärtner, lyrics by Gustav Falke

The Gardener translation by Hélène Lindqvist

I was appointed its gardener and tended to it for years
and there was no other tree on earth as lovely as this one
And if others delighted in it, my happiness was even greater
and when someone came to nag, I smiled and loved it anyway
And now when it’s blossoming so pure and fine and wonderful
my heart fears and worries: you fool, this little tree is no yours!
The fruits now softly appearing from these flowers
My God, a stranger will come and shake them into his lap
