The swedish composer Elfrida Andrée (1841 – 1926) was born on the beautiful island Gotland. She studied composition with Niels Gade and Ludwig Norman. However, being a woman, she was not permitted to do so at a conservatory.After she initiated a change of the law to allow women to be organists, she herself was the organist at the cathedral in Göteborg for most of her life.
She also fought for women’s right to become telegraph key operators, and was the first woman who held such a position. (Her sister, Fredrika Stenhammar, a well-known opera singer and a member of the swedish music academy, was also the aunt of Wilhelm Stenhammar, one of the most famous swedish composers.)
